Archived Webinar: Making Your Site Appeal To Both Customers & Search Engines

Posted 5/31/2009 by PeterV, VP, Marketing

We had a tremendous turnout for our Webinar last week about search engine friendly design.  However I do know that there were some who weren't able to attend.  We've uploaded a video of the session for you to watch on your own.

Last time we used google video, however that service is no longer available to upload large files (the webinar is about an hour long).  However we've found a service that should work.  If you do encounter any problems, please let us know and we'll do our best to remedy the situation.

Here is the link to download the wmv file to watch on your own computer:

Thank you for sharing

Thank you for sharing and archiving the video. It was very good.

I have a question, if it is not too late.

I have a lot of pages that can not be viewed until a customer logs into the website. Are these pages included in "rankings". Can spiders crawl them?

Thank you in advance.

The answer is no, search engine spiders cannot crawl pages that are password protected. (Or, if the pages are showing up in the search engine, then the password protection is somehow broken)

Web sites that have a lot of content behind password protected areas lose out on potential good search rankings because the search engines can't see all the content. As a result, it is a good idea to make as much content as possible public.

One tip is to have the first paragraph or two of each piece of content public, then the rest ("Read More...") can be password protected. That way at least part of all of the content is public to the search engines.

Also consider no-follow code

As a side note, if there are non-protected areas that you don't want to be indexed for whatever reason, you can insert code provided by google called "no follow" code, which tells the spiders not to follow certain links.

Another Q&A re: PDF's

By Geoff
Geoff

I got this question by email and thought I'd share the answer here:

PDF-how spiderable are they in search? Is it best to title each pdf with appropriate key words for seo? Or is it just the quantity of files that Google indexes towards content count?

PDFs are spiderable, but not as good as normal HTML pages. So if you can put the same content on a normal HTML page (through the Content Management System), that would be preferred. But if you have a lot of info in a PDF that needs to stay in a PDF, then yes, rename the PDF file to contain at least a few keywords in the title. That will help a little bit.

Thanks!

Great suggestions! The information behind the username/password could be partly shared. I like your idea Geoff.

In my case, the PDF's would be behind a username/password, so they would be left out.

Thanks again Geoff and Peter. You have been very helpful and fast to respond. Your work is top notch!
